In the mid 1990’s, we invented the digital video recorder (DVR) – yes,
before TiVo - and licensed the technology to cable TV set-top-box makers. As a private label technology, we garnered a larger footprint of the US market than the branded TiVo service. Millions of subscribers of leading cable TV companies like Time Warner Cable, Cox and Rogers use MbTV to record and watch television.
We built a business model around learning a viewer’s preferences and using them to predict what the viewer will watch, automatically record programs, and deliver targeted advertising. We spun off MbTV into an independent business in 2000 and received $20 million in investments from our partners Technicolor (previously known as Thomson), Seagate (a leading manufacturer of hard disks), Canal Plus Technologies (a division of Vivendi-Universal) and Scientific Atlanta (now a part of Cisco)
